A group of 61 German Texans were attacked by Confederate soldiers at Nueces River as they attempted to flee the state. Over thirty were brutally killed. Earlier that year, as it became clear that Texas was planning to draft state residents into the Confederate Army, a number of German Texans began to voice their objection to the confederate cause. Confederate authorities quickly declared a state of rebellion and sent soldiers to suppress all open resistance. Many of the German communities in Texas were able to escape to Mexico, but others were not so lucky. I guess now a day, they’ve upgraded from massacres to the prison industrial complex.
