On this day, August 7, in 1960

A year and a half after the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro nationalized all US owned industrial and agrarian enterprises in Cuba, making them the property of the Cuban government. Castro had begun nationalizing American properties and industries throughout the previous year, completely crushing America’s domination over the Cuban economy. These actions infuriated the US, who placed an total embargo on the socialist country. After failing to overthrow Castro the next year, the American government continued to penalize Cuba with harsh economic and immigration restrictions. I mean, how dare Cuba want to run its own economy!
