The Battle of Waireka began. This battle was part of The First Taranaki War, which was a land conflict that broke out between the indigenous Maori people and the British Settlers in New Zealand. Although the British were badly defeated in this war, this victory for the Maori was only a small part of the larger New Zealand Land Wars, in which huge areas of land were stolen from the Maori. A treaty signed back in 1840 had guaranteed Maori tribes undisturbed possession of their lands, but the British had more military power, and obviously more greed.
