DTV Conference in Harlem

PPH is participating at a conference on the DTV transition from 10am-1pm on Wednesday, September 17th. The conference is being held at the Adam Clayton Powell State Office building at 163 West 125th Street and is hosted by the Harlem Consumer Education Council, the Federal Communication Commission and National Telecommunication and Information Administration. PPH's Joshua Breitbart and representatives from each organization will be there to talk about the upcoming transition in February. There will also be free demonstrations on how to set up your Digital Television converter and an opportunity to pick up government coupons that can be used towards the purchase of a new DTV converter box.

People's Production House recently participated in a great panel on the digital television (DTV) transition, hosted by Devorah Hill from Manhattan Neighborhood Network. Our co-panelists were Glen Ford from Black Agenda Report, Joel Kelsey from Consumers Union, and Lawrence Carter-Long from the Disabilities Network of New York City.

PPH to testify at congressional hearing on the DTV transition in Brooklyn on Friday

The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform is holding a hearing on the digital television (DTV) transition in Brooklyn on Friday. People's Production House will be testifying at the hearing about the impact the federally mandated switch from analog television broadcasts to digital will have on New Yorkers who rely on over-the-air broadcasts for TV.

As I wrote in an article in February, "Counting Down to the Great Television Turnover," the DTV transition has the potential to disrupt access to free television for the hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers who get free television over the airwaves.

What does the DTV Transition mean for New York City?

My latest column for Gotham Gazette is on the government-mandated transition to digital television (DTV). It takes you through all of the places where this process can go wrong: the coupons the government is handing out for the digital converter boxes, your TV, your antenna, the broadcaster, and the public education.

Since we published the article, one more snafu has come to light. Everyone I spoke to recommended getting a coupon and a converter and setting up your TV as soon as possible. However, the $40 coupons the government is offering expire 90 days from when they’re mailed. I don’t know why they put an expiration date on them.
