As hurricane Gustav made its landfall on New Orleans and other cities of the Gulf region, much of the media attention has focused on the never-seen-before evacuation organized by local authorities. But less has been said about victims who were unable to evacuate more than three years ago when both Katrina and Rita hit the Gulf Coast and three years later are still struggling to rebuild their lives.
One of the hardest hit communities in Louisiana, both this year and back in August 2005, has been the Houma Tribal Nation of the Bayou. When Katrina and Rita came, hundred of families lost their homes, and the local fishing industry was heavily devastated. As the damage caused by Gustav is still being assessed, local residents are bracing for the worst.
This past July, the tribal community held its annual youth summer camp. More than 24 high school youths participated at the week-long camp and People's Production House was there to train the youth in radio production. One of the campers, Randi Lynn Gros sat down with Brenda Dardar Robichaux, the principal chief of the United Houma Nation and main organizer of the summer camp. She has a lot to say about the recovery efforts that was going on then following Katrina and Rita. Listen to this critical interview to learn more about the people of Houma.
