The Stone Wall Riots erupted in Greenwich Village when police raided a gay bar called the Stonewall Inn. New York City's LGBT communities were use-to police harassment and raids, but on this night the crowd fiercely resisted, quickly overpowering the police. As word of the rioting spread throughout the community, thousands of gays, lesbians, and transgender people, including many working-class people and people of color, joined the struggle. Sporadic rioting continued for five nights, followed by several nights of protests. The uprisings had a deep impact on the world, and the riots are often credited as being the birth of the America's Gay Liberation Movement.
