US president James K. Polk addressed the US congress confirming that large amounts of gold had been discovered in California. This announcement led to the California Gold Rush and immediately increased immigration and westward migration in America. Soon after the easily accessible Gold was gone and competition rose, greed took its toll. California passed a foreign miners tax and Americans began organizing attacks on foreign miners, particularly Latino and Chinese miners. The population boom in California began driving Native Americans even further from their land. When they responded by trying to protect their homes, the American miners committed acts of genocide on native villages, often leaving no survivors.
