During WWII, the US dropped the atomic bomb ‘little boy’ on the Japanese city of Hiroshima, making it the first city in history to be hit by a nuclear weapon. An estimated 140,000 people died because of the blast and the resulting radiation exposure, almost all of who were civilians. US President Truman ordered the bombings after the Japanese Government declined the terms of surrender that the US, China and Britain had put forth the previous month, with the intention of forcing Japan to surrender through widespread destruction and intimidation. The atomic bombings of both Hiroshima and Nagasaki are the only actual instances where nuclear weapons have been used in a war. Talk about large-scale terrorism.
