Nat Turner led a huge slave uprising in Southhampton County, Virginia. The revolt began with only six followers, but eventually gained the support of approximately 60 slaves, who traveled from house to house murdering white slave owners and freeing the slaves. 57 whites were killed. Although Nat Turner managed to escape the pursuing militia for six weeks, he was eventually arrested and brutally executed. In the months that followed, 55 black people suspected of being involved in Nat Turners' Rebellion were executed and hundreds more were beaten, tortured and slaughtered by angry white mobs. While controversial, Nat Turner is viewed by many as a heroic symbol of black resistance to oppression. A little too militant for American black history month.
